Happy New Year to each and every one of you! We are thrilled to start this year by sharing incredible news with you!
It’s difficult to know where to begin as we share the progress we made last year and the preparations that are in place for what’s to come! 2015 was a powerful year for art in El Paso. It was a definitive year for the collective and a crucial year for establishing how we will do all of the very big things we’ve set out to do.
We want to start by sharing our most exciting accomplishment of 2015! The Caldo Collective is proud to announce that we are officially a tax-exempt 501c3 nonprofit organization! We began this journey just over two years ago and could not be more proud of how far we’ve come in such a short time.
Here are just a few of the things we took on and accomplished this year with your help:
Caldo worked with, assisted and/or collaborated with more than 50 LOCAL artists to generate opportunities for this community to TOUCH a work of art. Together with you, we raised nearly $10,000 with almost 500 individual and DIRECT community donations! We funded two local artists’ projects in full and provided seed funding for another.
Caldo made it possible for the community to contribute directly to the creation of a mural by youth transitioning out of foster care, a public installation that tells the stories of fronterizas and working women who live in El Paso, a short film that tells a “Dia de los Muertos” story in an entirely new way and we offered our community three contemporary exhibitions through our public art program!
Caldo worked with professional grant writers and arts administrators to create and facilitate FREE professional development workshops for more than 35 local artists-workshops that are otherwise inaccessible or unavailable in El Paso.
We worked with the community to gather hundreds of memories, stories and ideas that became the fuel for our public art program. We made art WORK in an alley… in a window… in your neighborhood, reaching nearly 4000 people through our public art program.
We focused on substantial, process-driven projects that examined the actual issues our community faces using contemporary art practices.
We took risks and broke through the boundaries that limit what art can be and do in our community in the 21st century.
We focused on producing work that is true to our history, to our diverse identity and to the important issues that live subtly in our community and serve to reflect a valuable global dialogue.
Through hours of field research and ACTUAL conversations at ground level, we gained an understanding of where art truly is in our community and, more importantly, where it is not. Through hundreds of hours of work, mostly voluntary, we tested our own limits and discovered just how much work there is to be done. We learned so so much.
2016 is going to be an incredible year!
Here are just some of the things we’re looking forward to.
Frijol Feasts will call you to the table three times this year! We’re excited to begin partnering with local arts educators to offer our first ever Young Artists award through our summer feast!
We’ll be offering four extensive (and FREE!) professional development workshops for artists living and working in El Paso, Juarez and Las Cruces. We’ll make sure we continue creating free resources for them to seek out and take on every opportunity available to them.
We’ll bring you three NEW exhibitions through our public art program. As a teaser—we’re looking forward to making art WORK at actual street level via El Paso’s public transit system!
Finally, we’ll launch a month of full blown art festivities, actions and happenings as we call on you to get involved and help to shape the future of this community!
Let’s put art to work!
With our warmest Regards,
Executive Director and Co-Founder
